For related information on the use of copper, we have a what is euphemistically referred to as a "white paper" on this subject. White Paper Additional information on the use of copper for plumbing is available from copper.org at http://www.copper.org/copperhome/PHC/phc_plumbing.html For your additional information, copper plumbing is used on virtually all commercial building projects in Nevada. Whether copper is an affordable option for the homeowner is another matter.
There are three grades of copper pipe for domestic water use, two of which are common in residential construction, Type M and Type L. One difference between the two is in terms of the thickness of the outside copper wall, "M" being a thinner walled pipe than Type L copper pipe. A pipe with a thicker wall can withstand greater internal pressure before bursting. In general, the thicker walled Type L pipe can withstand more than 40% more pressure than a Type M pipe. Having said that, Type M pipe is designed to withstand working pressures far in excess of pressures delivered to the home's plumbing system. Please note that the inside diameter of the thinner Type M tube is larger than the inside diameter of the Type L tube. While Delta Mechanical has an office locally, Repipe Specialists is a CA based company that is in the process of establishing an office here.
In the case of Repipe Specialists, you can arrange for someone to contact you by calling their toll-free number. A company representative will visit you. The company may set up informal gatherings of several homeowners to go over their product offerings, which, in addition to the all cooper system, includes a competitively priced PEX piping system package that is covered by Pulte’s compensation offering.
According to Jeff Butler, President of Repipe Specialists, the price for their all copper plumbing system, which incorporates a number of non-standard features, is in the range of $11,000 to $17,000, depending on the size of the home. Delta Mechanical's pricing on copper is by the fixture.
Insofar as Delta Mechanical is concerned, for a complete interior replumb using the thinner walled Type M copper, DM charges $525/fixture. To illustrate, if you have 15 fixtures in your home, the price (including drywall/painting) is $7,875. The price for Type L copper is $585/fixture. The third type (Type K) is typically not used in residential plumbing. DM's pricing is for the total package, meaning that homeowners do not have the option of a discounted amount and using a different drywall company.
Fixtures are counted as follows: each sink = 1; tub = 1; shower = 1; combination tub/shower = 1; toilet = .5; 2 hose bibs = .5; water heater = 1, reverse osmosis = .5; water softener = 1; recirculating pump = 1; dishwasher = .5; ice maker = .5; and the washing machine = 1. There are additional charges for optional items the homeowner may wish to have installed, which includes adding copper pipe for the exterior sprinkler line for $400.
