Police say, "they only need a few inches to get their fingers under the door and they can lift it up."
Some Sun City homeowners leave their garage door open a crack overnight or in the early morning just to get the hot air out. That opening may be just enough to draw attention from an unwelcomed observer, an intruder, as our neighbor around the corner, Mike, recently learned.
Some construction workers arriving early in the morning for work are looking for an opportunity to rob you. It only takes a minute and the damage can be very personal and devastating.
If your neighbor keeps their garage door open a crack, please alert them to what been happening. Here is Mike's story as it was relayed to his friends and neighbors by his wife.
Fellow Anthem Residents and Friends,
This is an alert to notify you NOT to leave your garage door up even a little. We woke up about 4:45am this morning and Mike opened the house up and raised the garage door up about 20 inches to get the hot air out. The garage door had only been open for 10 minutes. He laid down back down in bed for a few minutes when we got a phone call from our neighbor across the street.
Our neighbor was pulling out of his garage to go up to the Rec. Center when he notice a dark blue small car (he thinks is was a Honda) and a dark skinned man got out and crawled under our garage door. He called us immediately on his cell phone and started honking his horn.
Mike ran out just as the guy got into his car and pulled away and was already up the street. The intruder had gotten into our car and had gone through the compartment between the seats and had thrown everything out on the seat. He stole a phone and we are not sure what else.
We called the Police and Anthem Security Patrol. The Police responded within minutes! They got some great fingerprints and a good palm print.
The police said they there had been a rash of these kinds of crimes up here because people do exactly what we do and leave their garage door open just a little. The Police said they only need a few inches to get their fingers under the door and they can lift it up.
We never leave our garage door open overnight and always keep the door to the house locked but it only takes a few minutes if the wrong type of person comes by to break-in. Of course, our good watchdog was fast asleep and slept through the whole thing!
This was very daring of this guy because you could not see anything from the street, the garage door was not open that much. It only takes one time and a few inches to put you and your family at risk!
Hope this is a reminder that we are not as safe up here as we thought. Even with the Security Patrol that had just driven by and this guy still took a change to get something of worth.
