Proposed Guidelines to Combat Open Pit Mining Operations 

Below are some guidelines to express your concern over an applicant's request of BLM to initiate open pit mining near Sun City Anthem, from Donna Dickey, BLM Mining Project Task Force

The Bureau of Land Management is currently reviewing a draft Environmental impact Study regarding the Sloan Hills Mineral Material site, which is the largest open-pit mining operation in southern Nevada).  Following are ideas to incorporate into a letter in opposition to this proposal.

“To Whom It May Concern:

We are adamantly opposed to the Sloan Hills Mineral Material site because of serious impacts on the surrounding communities’ health and quality of life.”

•   Plant is on 640-acre site near many communities of both young families and seniors.  Will seriously affect those with health and respiratory problems.
•   Plant is to operate on a 24/7 basis for up to 30 years producing 100 million tons of aggregate.
•   There will be continual blasting and rock crushing producing extreme noise pollution.
•   Heavy machinery, conveyor belts, water trucks, forklifts, cranes, dozers, etc. will be in full operation at all times.
•   Transport trucks will use public roads, which we will be responsible for maintaining with our tax dollars.  It is estimated that trucks will be coming and going every 2 ½ minutes.
•    Approximately 1600 gallons of water per minute will be needed for mining operation in addition to two water trucks--10,000 gallon and 8,000 each–-to help control dust pollution.
•    This water is to be obtained by drilling into the subterranean aquifer squandering a precious resource.  We are expected to conserve water, yet Cemex and Service Rock (the two applicants) are allowed great access to a limited resource.
•    This mining claim is located in the only direction our city can grow.
•    High, unpredictable swirling winds will carry dust and pollution into surrounding communities.
•    There are 2 faults running from NW to SE.  How can the blasting for many years not be a cause for serious repercussions?   
  

Your letters should be sent to Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign, Congresswoman Dina Titus and Congressman Dean Heller with a copy to County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and Shonna Dooman at the Bureau of Land Management (see below). The only way we can stop this project is by (Federal) Congressional vote.

Please stress health, safety, quality of life issues.  Do not list your lowered property values as an issue of concern.  It may be important to us individually, but it will have no influence on how we can prevent this mining project from going forward.
