Logging in to SCA’s new website. It seems a week has passed but it was only yesterday when we broached this simple matter with our readers. We have developed some additional information for your consideration while the Board, perhaps hunkering down in their resolve, and after employing the “The Cone of Silence,” considers this ostensibly routine matter further.  On logging in

Day and Night. An incredible image from space of day and night in the same picture from the historic mission of the space shuttle Columbia. Day and Night

On Washing Dishes. Some tips! DW advises that you can save water by using the dishwasher as opposed to hand washing. And GE advises that dishes should first be rinsed before being placed in the dishwasher because their food grinder performs quite poorly and will need replacing sooner if the dishes are not reasonably cleared of food before being placed in the dishwasher.

The Old Puzzler? We are told by numerous residents that everyone knows about this pictured structure, but despite that there remains a lack of agreement about the “who” as well as the “size,” differing by 20-40,000 sq. ft. Most interestingly, the only things known in common is that this building is in Seven Hills, just off Eastern Ave.; is a very large home under construction; and the presumed owner has something to do with eBay.

The Puzzler 2? A proposed library setting for SCA or seating at a new Chinese restaurant?  The Puzzler

The New SCACA Website! Has anyone wondered why at Anthem you have to “log in” to look at features that are readily available at other DW communities without the need to be pre-registered (as we all are) and the need to log in? While there are several examples, take a look at the DW-controlled Sun City Grand totally open website.   Sun City Grand  Is “Big Brother” a little too close for comfort?

SCACA Inaugurates Website! Wow and congratulations to the SCACA’s Communications Committee and their tremendous efforts in inaugurating Sun City Anthem’s own website. It’s a great site, a wealth of needed information about the business of the Association and its wide-ranging amenities and Clubs, and a very good beginning in efforts to open up communications between residents and staff and those selfless volunteers who daily are taking steps to enrich our lifestyle. Check it out: www.suncityanthem.org

The Puzzler? We are getting some great suggestions on answers to our puzzler. Here are a few of hints: The structure is about the same size as the Anthem Center building; on a very clear day, one just might be able to see (with help) the top of this nearby structure from the Anthem Center’s walking path; the building’s owner, of all things, has a weblog, which anyone can access.  The Puzzler

Comment Cards. Board meeting Comment or “Blue” Cards have played a positive role in providing a valuable input for resident concerns and questions. The Association’s new website provides residents with the opportunity to submit a Blue Card online. We too would like the opportunity to offer residents who visit our website that same online option. You can take a look at what we would like to offer by clicking here:  Comment Card

The Change in Leadership Bodes Well for Sun City. Contrary to the expectations of some, all signs are pointing to a successful changeover in our management style from what some had come to view as a benevolent dictatorship to a less grating, more benign and open oligarchy—or as I has have affectionately referred to our newbie board members, the gang of four. Our hopefully quick learners, admittedly on-the-job neophytes when it comes to running our very substantial business enterprise, will need the assistance and support from their board member peers. Based on my observations, it is clear that our new board members are working well together and are intent on bringing us the very best they can offer. We wish them well and encourage everyone to support their efforts.

Pulte Relents on Demand to Cease and Desist. After we at the SCA View were accused by Pulte’s patent attorney of Trademark Infringement, Unfair Competition, Dilution, Copyright Infringement and Cybersquatting and demanding that we cease use of certain trademarks claimed by Del Webb, and following an exchange of correspondence, Pulte has written us to advise that they are withdrawing their objections and will permit us to use their trademarks as we deem appropriate. An interesting & welcome outcome.

What Does that New Sign Mean? As you are driving down Eastern Ave. and approaching what used to be Green Valley Pkwy., you might have noticed a new sign in the median: LIBRARY. To find out more: LIBRARY

A Library for SCA?  We hope this new library presence in Seven Hills will not diminish the resolve of those who would like to see Sun City acquire and have the benefit of an on-site, full-featured library facility serving the reading and borrowing needs of the community.

Spirit Magazine, for June.  Now Online

Eating Crow. As distasteful as eating that crow might be, I find that I must oblige by eating a plentiful plate of that vile bird for I have committed a grievous reporting error. Relying on what I first thought was correct information, I then discovered, only too late though, that I was wrong and that I had conveyed incorrect information concerning our stucco situation [in our 22 May SCA View]. I deeply regret this mistake, hoping that the delay in getting back to you has not created any undue concern.

Rather than an EIFS stucco product product, we have what is commonly referred to as a “one-coat” stucco product that is typically  3/8” thick, compared to the older, more traditional three-coat stucco finish that is typically ¾” thick. Like the traditional stucco product, the “one-coat” stucco base is mostly sand and Portland cement, but unlike the traditional stucco, the base coat includes fiber reinforced, synthetic polymers to strengthen the coat and compensate for the reduced thickness. This relatively new application process has speeded up the application of stucco, resulting in a labor saving feature for the contractor.

By the way, water drainage is taken care of by the presence of 1 layer of grade ‘D’ building paper, which when it get wet acts to drain any water down the vertical plane to the weep holes. While both EIFS and the one-coat stucco systems have had their detractors, past water damage issues, and law suits, the overwhelming problems have been associated with EIFS and not with one-coat stucco systems.

Although there is a 1-year warranty on the stucco, if you find any cracking issues that concern you at any time (or that exceed the tolerances spelled out in your Del Webb Home Warranty book under the section for Stucco, Masonry & Veneer), call DW’s Customer Care at 914-4850. (They are no longer here in Anthem and have relocated to 8345 West Sunset, near the 215 and Durango.) If DW cannot help, contact DW’s contractor, Executive Plaster at 657-8257 and they are anxious to assist, answer questions, including performing any needed repair work, whether in or out of the warranty period, as I was told.

According to EP, for those looking to purchase caulking material, purchase only those products that has an acrylic base, preferable one that also has silicon, such as siliconized acrylic latex caulk.

Will SCA’s Synthetic Clad Exterior Walls Protect Us From Future Water Damage? Maybe! To learn more about this issue and the long wait ahead for real answers, check out our initial report on this leaky matter. It took 15 years to find out that synthetic stucco #1 had serious problems. We are now testing the initial offering of synthetic stucco #2.  Synthetic stucco  NOTE: THIS ERRONEOUS REPORT WAS DELETED.

“Sun City [Summerlin] Homeowners Claim Water Damage Results of Defects.” Homeowners have filed the state’s largest lawsuit against Del Webb Communities, according to the 11 May issue of the LVRJ.  Class action status is being sought to represent all homeowners in Sun City Summerlin. Focus Group Meets the Residents. Snapshot. As the Focus Group was preparing for its pro-forma hearing before the Planning Commission on the 12th (today), the Focus team headed by John Ritter presented their vision and planning concepts before a packed-filled room earlier this week. There were no surprises. While the presentation was clearly informative, residents were understandably frustrated in their attempt to get answers to individual concerns. The residents who were most frustrated, though, appeared to be those who were seeking impact information. Those wondering about potential impact should consider two points: 1) Anthem at build out, with roughly twice the acreage as the Focus (South Edge) site, will have 30,000+ residents typically exiting out Eastern Avenue; and 2) South Edge at build out will eventually have 30,000+ residents typically existing out a rerouted Executive Airport Drive. While some residents will continue to utilize Volunteer, the City & our new neighbors have essentially insured that both communities will have only one primary exit strategy to St. Rose and Henderson. The implications are clear and while there should be no doubt who the losers are in all of this, at least there will be a few winners: those core group golfing buddies and others with golf carts, who will have their own travel lane from Sun City to the new town center. As we were recently reminded, those Focus folks listened carefully to our needs. I feel so much better knowing that. Staff Report & Street Plan (on Pg. 7)

35 MPH Speed Limits are Now in Place on Our Major Parkways. Try to obey the posted speed limits.

Badminton Anyone? Many thanks to those who responded to our call for interest in expanding outside court amenities, such as badminton. Did you know that 1) for the cost of one tennis court, you can build 3 badminton courts!2) the size of a badminton court is the same size as the size of a paddle tennis and a Pickleball court (a very popular court activity at Sun City Grand); & 3)   while a tennis ball can travel 100 mph in professional play, a badminton birdie is reported to travel up to 200 mph!

Shuffleboard Tables? Several residents wrote asking when the shuffleboard tables are scheduled to return to the main gallery—having been told by the Board that their removal was only a temporary situation—now that 4 of the gallery pool tables are on the potential disposal list. Whether shuffleboard disappears forever (as currently planned by the Board) or comes back may be up to the efforts of the shuffleboard playing community.

Prop. 13 for Nevada?  Following the tepid campaign rally for Favil West & Chuck Davis, otherwise called the property tax initiative discussion with Sharron Angle, Mr. West announced that the Board will not be taking any action on this matter. Hope you are not too disappointed.

Barking Dogs! I was pleased to recently learn that the nuisance of a barking dog is an Association punishable offence, where the owner can be assessed a fine. If this is a problem for you and you are unable to resolve this matter with your neighbor, you can contact Barbara Thomas, SCACA’s Community Standards Director.

No Onstage Celebrations Allowed at Freedom Hall. Over exuberant celebrations on closing the final chapter on the Trumpets indebtedness issue will not be allowed on the stage of Freedom Hall for the not so simple reason that the stage, yes, is reported to be crumbling. I’m tempted to add, crumbling almost like the Trumpets indebtedness figure has fallen before our eyes. Considering the stage’s dire circumstances, a more fitting place could not have been found to say our final respects to the Trumpets indebtedness issue.

The Conclave. Also on the 18th, but at the Vatican, a church conclave will convene to decide who will lead the Catholic church. While speculation is running rampant, those who can assemble a clear majority but have less than 2/3 have only to wait out the two-week balloting period before electing the new pope with only a simple majority. Just that prospect may force an early agreement. In the 13th century the papacy was vacant for a year and a half before coming to an agreement and later for three and a half years before the cardinals selected a pope. See NPR’s The Papal Transition  for a fact filled article. For a more detailed discussion of “Conclave,” see the article from the 1911 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Grand Opening Photos. We took some candid shots of the grand

opening ceremonies and our new recreation center building.    Candid photos

On Campaigning. Some thoughts to ponder. Thanks to a well crafted

strategy, landside Jim Gibson, also present at our grand opening ceremonies, will not have to face a run off. Also a top vote getter in our recent election was Linda Hampton, running for municipal court judge. How did these two manage to come out on top? While many things go into a successful campaign, one of those intangibles is taking to the streets and visiting one’s neighbors. In this past municipal campaign, we were surprised to see two campaign visitors at our door: Linda Hampton and a representative of Mayor Gibson.

The Great Souvenir Scissors Heist. A crime of what some may

view as ceremony over exuberance was witnessed the other night as I left the grand opening of Independence Center. While walking out of the new center, I glanced to my left as that otherwise very nice lady proceeded to pause briefly at the unattended audio equipment table just outside of the entrance. Sensing a prized opportunity awaiting her, and  without missing a step, a hand deftly swung into action, darting quickly to fetch a pair of those ceremonial ribbon-cutting scissors. Now safely in her clutches, this small offering would become what she brashly announced to those who were nearby as her “grand-opening souvenir,” almost as if she was entitled and apparently in an unembarrassed attempt to justify her souvenir scissors heist.

Is there a Rush to Judgment? Notwithstanding that a new Board

is scheduled to take office in a little over a month, one gathers there is no longer any room for community, let alone our new Board’s, input into the third recreation center. While I find that prospect difficult to comprehend, one is left with the possibility of an unusual rush to judgment just prior to the new Board taking office. If true, will that fact be a blessing or future burden for the community?

More Tree Vandalism. This past week, apparently on two separate occasions, we experienced more tree vandalism south of Thunder Bay. Either the message sent with the reward offer hasn’t gotten through or had its desired affect, as some had expected, or we have yet to identify the location of the likely culprits.

Street Safety. As we have reported, and as Favil West reported this past week, he has been busy attempting to tie up loose ends with the City on our traffic concerns, with a range of solutions coming down the pike. Whether making golf cart use on our major parkways “legal” under the law is the answer only time will tell—and whether efforts to make such use legal will also lead to more safe use. Look for an upcoming agreement with City officials in an effort to slow down the speed from 70 mph while also addressing these and related traffic concerns.

Pet Club Pick Up Day!  To the warm appreciation of residents in attendance at this week’s Board meeting, the Pet Club announced plans to engage in a community poop pick up. If they need to sniff out some more help in this effort, perhaps our local EPC Block Captains could volunteer to help in policing local village areas.

Finance Transition Report. Jack Silas presented a well reasoned and quite thorough set of recommendations for dealing with future financial matters, attributing the report’s thoroughness to the very high level of financial expertise available to the community. Both Jack and George Gingerelli (who also spoke briefly) in his management report had strongly recommend the benefits of contracting out of the operations of the community compared to the alternative of having employees and doing it all in house. We expect that the Board will be, if they have not already, executing a formal agreement with Del Webb to continue as our management contractor.

Name for New Recr. Building. A ballot box with ballots for voting has been placed in the foyer of the Anthem Center. Balloting must be completed by 5 April in time for counting and the grand opening on 7 April. Suggested names were chosen to reflect continuity with the community’s revolutionary theme of existing names, such as Coventry, Anthem, Concord, Revere, Lexington, etc.  Please vote ASAP.

What, No Community Services Bathroom!  To alleviate the concerns of those who are troubled by the absence of any bathroom facilities in the new 3,500 sq. ft. community services building, some residents have written and called us to express their concern and interest in placing a porta-potty nearby as an interim solution. While we assume those proposals were made in jest to illustrate a delicate point, there may be some drawbacks to adopting a porta-potty as a solution, as illustrated in this unusual film clip, Oh, Crap.

Rest assured, we will not be put through that creative process in the case of that RC3 satellite building to be built a mile up the hill. It seems that while you and I were blinking the other day, RAC had already, well, “completed” its arduous task and the decision ball has been quietly and quickly moved on to Del Webb’s court. Some will miss those RAC meetings and especially those informative reports on their progress.

City Downplays Traffic Concerns. In a meeting we had last week with a City official on West Henderson development, the message for Sun City residents could not have been clearer or more disappointing. No one in the City is concerned enough about mitigating our traffic concerns emanating from Focus or Pulte’s developments. If I can paraphrase what I was told, we’ll just have to lump the consequences of these events on us and our parkways.

Should Favil West Throw His Hat Into the Ring? Teddy Roosevelt said as much when he entered the presidential race in 1912, giving that old boxing term a political context. Mr. West has been tossing his proverbial hat into the ring and meeting challenges from his teenage days on the family’s ranch in Arizona and has never looked back. His work here is not yet finished and we would welcome his decision to run again for the Board. An Election Viewpoint

Carmina Burana. “The famous opening chorus [from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana] - 'O Fortuna' - is surely one the most dramatic and powerful passages of music ever written. . . . Beware of E-mail Attacks. This past week we were attacked by e-mail by someone seeking personal information or to do us harm in some financial manner. This insidious practice, called “phishing” is typically sent as some type of ALERT to get your attention and from a familiar internet source, such as PayPal, VISA, eBay, or any number of banking institutions. In our case, we were told that our banking account would be closed within 48 hours if we did not respond. We have posted a copy of this fraudulent e-mail (Item #6) on our website for your information, along with other helpful information on identifying phishing and how you may avoid becoming a victim.   Phishing

What is the ECC? In the computer world “ECC” is a recognized acronym for “Error Checking and Correcting,” while here at Sun City, ECC identifies the existence of a brand new committee that, quite ironically, will be doing for Sun City’s communication efforts something akin to what ECC does in helping to keep computers running smoothly, that is, error checking. Rather than correcting data errors, our Editorial Content Committee, established by the Board on 30 September, and to be chaired by Carol Chapman, will be assuring that our communications to the community (Ch. 99, internet, newspaper, etc.) will be nothing other than very political correct.

Look to be more frequently informed about community & association events with expanded coverage from our elected and appointed officials, as well as from club representatives with articles on their activities. Contrary to other SCACA committees, the ECC, which reports directly to the Board, will not have open meetings, as announced by Favil West at this week’s Communication Committee. Unlike recent efforts by the CIA to further censure their employees, as some former spooks believe, our ECC will be looking to merely continue existing communication policies long established by Dell Webb/Pulte, that were designed to ……………………. Anyone wishing to obtain a copy of the ECC chartering document, you may pick one up at the SCACA Admin. Office, or by requesting a copy from us at editor@scaview.org. Cell Phone Towers Coming to Anthem! Today, Thursday, there are TWO Planning Commission public hearings on proposed cell phone towers. According to today’s South Valley News, a new newspaper serving this area, Anthem residents are in an uproar over Sprint’s proposal to construct a 26’ “pine tree” cell tower on the Anthem Golf Course near Hampton Road. Residents will be attempting to convince the Planning Commission that Sprint should go elsewhere. Item #10 on the Agenda. For some residents with those $100,000+ premium views, it’s one pine tree too many.

Then, there is the 80’ tower being proposed (Item #33) to be located on the commercial property on the northwest corner of Anthem Parkway and Bicentennial. Can Sprint be persuaded to find spare room on this “innocuous” 80’ tower instead? To view the agenda, click here: Planning Commission Agenda

A Timely Response to Dick Sovde’s Open Letter to Our Residents. Mr. Sovde now tells us there was an understood or as he puts the matter an implied contingency in Del Webb’s promise to mitigate our concerns over Anthem Highlands traffic. That’s very troubling information. Isn’t Dick more than 2½ years too late in conveying that critical bit of information? A question to ponder: If the core group knew that piece of information back when you and I cast our vote in favor of that Agreement, would that fact make that vote and agreement, in effect, a sham vote on a sham agreement? A sham agreement exists when both parties are not equally privy to the same information and the absence of such information by one party, in this instance, the contingency, could have affected the outcome of the vote on the agreement.  Commentary Today

Your Security Patrol’s Plea for Volunteers. Eureka, You Have Been Pre-Qualified to Serve! (See the Position Description Below) At the resident’s forum, Bob Berman made a special plea for more volunteers to participate in this worthwhile activity. Bob said that the patrol is falling way behind in its recruitment efforts and desperately needs more volunteers if they are going to be able to do their job effectively and properly. That job, Bob emphasized, has been growing along with the growth of the community and the patrol will continue to require more volunteers not merely to stay even with the present level of service (currently being provided only by working extra hours) but also to provide even greater efforts as we move towards build-out over the next two years. Bob said that the Security Patrol's unmet needs are so great now that the service may be forced to limit their patrols in the future to those Villages which are represented by those who make up the Patrol's volunteers. Bob, of course, was merely jesting, but he (and the community) do not want to see the level of patrols so diminished that the needs of the community are literally going unmet. Bob wanted to and was successful in stressing the gravity of the situation on those who were in attendance

Presidential Election Scoreboard. For those who wish to follow the polls, we are updating our website daily to reflect the results of Election Scoreboard, as reported by MSN Slate Magazine.   Presidential Election Scoreboard

Early Voting. Recommended, unless you have other concerns, as that kindly gentleman who approached our table at Buckman’s cautioned after spotting my “I voted” sticker, “But how do you known what’s going to happen in the next two weeks?”  In any event, early voting yesterday at the Anthem Center worked for us like a charm. It continues today (Thursday) at the Anthem Center until 7:00 pm and then moves on to Vons at Anthem Village on the 22nd (Friday) and the 23rd (Saturday). Early voting is also available at many other locations throughout the county. While 42 states and 50 million people will e-vote this election, Nevada is the first state to require a voter-verifiable printed ballot. The Board will act on the Committee’s recommendations at their meeting on Thursday October 28th.  Judge Says “No” to Extension of Property Tax Petition Initiative. In a stunning blow to property owners wishing to hold down increases in their property taxes, District Court Judge Ken Cory yesterday refused to grant an extension to mid-July, as the Court had done in two other petition initiative cases. According to Sharron Angle and Don Gustavson, authors of the petition and present at the hearing, there is nothing more that can be done at this time and that a new petition drive will have to await until this time in 2006. Sharon said that petitions signed to date are void and cannot be used for the purpose of the 2006 drive.

In this persons view, contributing to the failure to raise sufficient signatures in a timely manner was the petitioner’s decision to start the drive 41 days in advance of the due date. This observer assumes that that decision stemmed from a funding constraint for paid petition gatherers and related costs.

The judge’s decision not to grant an extension was based on two considerations. First, the state-wide opposition, not present in the other two petition cases, from a group representing the county registrars of voters; and second, the petitioner’s need to obtain a decision from the judge on the occasion of the hearing on the 25th.

The petitioners had the option of going forward at a later date with an evidentiary hearing on the alleged burden issues raised by the state registrars of voters, but declined to do so, saying that they needed an up or down decision now, not wishing to lose even more time and, in this observer’s opinion, with the likely prospect that they would not be able to prevail at a later date since the would have to impeach the very people who had brought the action against them in the first place. This placed the petitioners in an untenable evidentiary position. Including this observer, there were 3 Sun City residents in attendance, who packed the small standing room only court room.

Library Update. The good news is that we will have a dedicated library facility, plus we will be retaining the study/den/alcove areas as they were originally intended. The bad news is that the amount of dedicated library space (in the new recreation center building) being made available does not appear to be adequate (at 400 sq. ft.) in size to meet a variety of community needs for library use and services.

Voting Update. In an unusual turn of events, the Association, through their ultimate spokesperson, Chris Haines, had initially informed The SCA View that their decision not to include prepaid postage on return ballot envelops was based on an opinion rendered by the State of Nevada’s Ombudsman Office, which administers the law for common interest communities like Sun City Anthem. While that knowledge provided some measure of relief to those who might have been concerned that the Association was not in compliance with voting procedures mandated by the statute, that relief was very short lived.

According to Ombudsman Eldon Hardy in a statement to The SCA View, his office never rendered such an opinion and would never do so since it contradicts the statute. In view of Mr. Hardy’s denial, and backing away from his earlier position, Chris Haines is now no longer claiming that their decision was based on an opinion from the Ombudsman’s Office, but, instead he says that he is now relying on what he refers to as “legal support for their position.”

It now seems that Mr. Haines’ claim to The SCA View that the recent election had, and I quote, “complied with Nevada Revised Statutes” is approaching a Chicago-style political claim, mired, as it were, in quick sand absent any support from the one agency that is charged with administering the voting rules that apply to Sun City Anthem. One can only assume that looking to statutory authority for guidance is too great a burden to expect from our Association’s representatives. Some, we expect, will find this to be a troubling, but perhaps not an unexpected, result from certain parties.

An SCA View Special Editorial    SAVE OUR LIBRARY OPTIONS

With the close of National Library Week today, you are receiving this bibliotheca (library) S.O.S. alert and call for help on a matter of impending urgency, if not disaster for Sun City's residents and our potential library using community.[1] [Footnote on web site only]

We hope you will decide to answer our call for assistance when you visit our NEW LIBRARY HOME PAGE located at: http://www.scaview.org/Library.htm

No, do not panic, our library is not about to go up in flames, but, figuratively speaking at least, it might as well if the current “Library Modification” (LM) proposal now before the Property and Grounds Committee should become a reality. This harsh judgment is not because we do not appreciate the need for a library--we do. We just happen to believe that our community should be able to acquire a larger and more suitable library solution than the one envisaged by the "Library Modification" proposal.

We have a bare bones understanding of that LM proposal and we find it troubling for what it does and for what it attempts to do. The two most troubling features of the LM proposal are 1) the elimination of the Anthem Center's study/den as an informal gathering or casual meeting place; and 2) the inadequate size of that space to service as a suitable library. That study/den is located to the left of the main entrance off the corridor leading to the Delaware Room. We believe those particular outcomes are wrong, will not serve the best interests of the community, and will be inadequate to meet the long-term library needs of our community.

In its place, that 550 sq. ft. study/den area would be reconfigured to house our library. If the elimination of the study/den were not bad enough, converting that small enclave into a library unit would not appear to create the kind of library that would be sufficient in size and quality to meet our needs. Adding, as the LM plans, 200 sq. ft. by also eliminating the adjoining alcove/sitting area in front of the Delaware Room will not materially contribute to the suitability of that overall space as a worthwhile library.

·         Never mind that the study/alcove room is really too small and quite inadequate for the purpose of housing a suitable library, one that would be sufficient to serve the future needs of 11,000 residents;

·         Never mind that due to its very small size, that library would eventually become a storehouse for primarily paperback books, a regrettable outcome;

·         Never mind that we will loose that space as an informal gathering/meeting room as well as the adjoining alcove sitting area; and

·         Never mind that once done, there will be little if any opportunity or chance that our community would ever acquire or create a more suitable community library.

One must seriously question whether we really want to forego the delight of having available that quite beautiful study/den as an informal gathering/meeting place in favor of a room that eventually, due to its limited capacity, will be predominantly filled with paperback books. We do not think so and hope that you will agree.

Because of our concerns over the LM proposal and what admittedly would be an inadequate and ill-equipped library, we have made an alternate library proposal to the Property and Grounds Committee. We refer to this alternate proposal as the "New Library" proposal to distinguish it from the "Library Modification" proposal.

The importance of our proposal lies not so much in the library's location or in the details, but in the recognition that there is a need for the community to revisit the Library issue for Sun City Anthem. We suggest that if we were able to identify one potential library location as an alternative to the LM proposal, others from the community, acting individually or as a committee, may be able to identify other potential library locations as well.

Residents should be aware that there are fine library facilities located in other age-qualified communities. We have identified two. While we do not need to duplicate the 1,600 sq. ft. library (hardback books only) at one such facility, which also has 3 additional smaller libraries containing paperback books only, for half the number of homes we will have at build out, we do need to take better stock by assessing our community's long-term library needs. Working together, we should be able to achieve a better, more acceptable library solution than the one envisaged by the LM proposal.

We are repeatedly told that Del Webb will not provide any more additional building space. But we can all recall when the Del Webb genie raised its head briefly but long enough as the RAC was about to wind up its business last year to gin up a whirlwind of next to impossible amenities, like the second indoor pool, a 6,000 sq. ft. theater/hall, and space for community services. There’s just no telling what might be possible when it comes down to decisions that would help our community meet their library needs.

Whether we can or cannot acquire more space is less important to the library issue than the prospect of being able to tap that genie one more time for a little help in our efforts to find a mutually agreeable library solution. After all, we only have to look at what Del Web did for Sun City Palm Desert as a guide for what might be possible here. Surely, if there is a will, there should be a way.

Please visit our web site where you will find our New Library Home Page, with Links to a Fact Sheet and a drawing of a suggestive layout of how our proposed library might be configured. And when you do visit, please consider joining our S.O.S. efforts to provide our community with a library facility befitting and meeting the needs of our growing community.
